City of Compton Announces Opening of Winter Shelter Program
COMPTON– In anticipation of severe weather due to El Niño, the City of Compton has
announced the opening of their Winter Shelter Program. The program will operate through March 31, 2016 and provides meals, access to showers and transportation to and from shelter locations for participants.
Participants will be picked up at the following locations and times daily:
• 5 p.m. – McDonald’s, 101 W. Compton Blvd.
• 5:15 p.m. – Kentucky Fried Chicken, 221 S. Long Beach Blvd.
Male participants will be taken to Home At Last located at 7900 S. Western Avenue in Los Angeles while female participants will go to Second A.M.E. Church at 5500 S. Hoover Street also in Los Angeles. All participants will receive transportation back to pick-up locations. Pickup times may vary due to traffic or weather. Schedule maybe adjusted to meet current needs.
Please arrive 5 minutes early.
Walk-ups are allowed. Participants may line up at shelter locations starting at 2:30 p.m. and doors will open at 3 p.m. Participants may bring in one bag. There are 100 beds available at each location.
On days that it is raining, participants will be allowed to stay at shelter locations all day.
Winter shelters provide shelter, warmth, food and comfort to homeless individuals during the cold and wet weather season. In addition to temporary emergency shelter, each program location provides access to supportive services and housing assistance.
Over 1,400 beds will be available during the 2015-2016 Winter Shelter Program season across the County of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority coordinates the Winter Shelter Program in partnership with the California National Guard, the County of Los Angeles and the City of Los Angeles.
