Compton Students Give W-I-N-N-I-N-G Performances at Annual Spelling Bee

There was only one thing on the minds of Compton Unified School District (CUSD) students, grades 2 thru 8, at this year’s Spelling Bee — winning.

This year’s event, held at Enterprise Middle School, featured fierce competition from the District’s top spellers as they battled through several rounds before the top three were decided.

Students competed in three divisions: Primary (grades 2-3), Junior (4-5), and Senior (6-8).

This year’s winners are:

Primary Division
First Place – Diego Alcaraz, third grade, Dickison Elementary School
Second Place – Jenedy Placencia, third grade, Kennedy Elementary School
Third Place – Curtis Davis, third grade, Tibby Elementary School

The last time Dickison Elementary School third-grader Diego Alcaraz competed in the District’s Spelling Bee, he lost in the first round, but he knew to never give up. Now he’s this year’s Primary Division champion.

“I competed in second grade where I lost on my first word,” he said. “This time I practiced every day. My mom and I sat with a dictionary to learn more words. I also started reading more. That’s why I’m a winner.”

Junior Division
First Place – Justin Juarez, fifth grade, McKinley Elementary School
Second Place – Aaron Placencia, fifth grade, Clinton Elementary School
Third Place – Alexa Valdez, fifth grade, Dickison Elementary School

Senior Division
First Place – Alexis Leon, sixth grade, Clinton Elementary School
Second Place – Noel Lopez, eighth grade, Jefferson Elementary School
Third Place – Trevon Taylor, sixth grade, Carver Elementary School
