Board President Satra Zurita Regarding Sick Outs by teachers in CUSD
Today, many of our teachers at nine schools called in sick in relation to what appears to be their dissatisfaction with the ongoing contract negotiations between the Compton Unified School District and Compton Education Association. This is the second time this week that the teachers have chosen to miss work and carry over the issues related to the contract negotiations to our students, schools, and community.
We have achieved great things in the District. Our students are doing better than they have in years — test scores and graduation rates are up. Our teachers deserve a lot of credit for this turnaround. We know that negotiations are a way of life in education and we are continuing to work towards reaching a fair agreement with the Compton Education Association. All we ask our teachers is to not let the negotiations effect what is happening in the classroom. Sickouts only hurt our children who want and deserve continuity in the classroom.
As was the case on Monday, the District is on top of this situation and made arrangements to have substitute teachers and additional staff in the classrooms to ensure that students continue to receive the best possible educational experience.
